    PUNJAS GAIN TOP MARK!

Punjas Biscuits obtains British Retail Consortium (BRC) A+ Rated Certification

Punjas Biscuits is one of the first biscuit manufacturers in the Asia Pacific Region to have been awarded the prestigious BRC A+ accreditation within such a short timeframe from commencing operations in December 2014 at Lautoka.

So what are the benefits of BRC Food Safety Certification and what does it mean for Punjas?

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is the leading trade association for UK retailing.  Although the BRC food safety standard began in the UK, it is now recognized as a global standard. BRC initially developed its Global Standard for Food Safety in order to help the food industry meet legislative requirements of the EU General Product Safety Directive and the UK Food Safety Act.

The BRC was the first standard to be recognized as meeting the GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) benchmarked food safety scheme. Benchmarking to GFSI ensures that the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety is accepted by many of the world’s biggest retail groups, e.g., Walmart. The BRC’s ability to react to changing food safety concerns, meet customer requirements, and yet provide a simple, easy-to-follow process for manufacturers, has resulted in the Standard becoming one of the most popular GFSI standards.

The BRC Standard meets the strong need to preserve the integrity of branded products. The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety is a single verification that ensures both the fulfilment of legal obligations and of customer protection. It is currently used by suppliers in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Far East, North and South America and Australia.

Individual consumers, consumer advocate groups, and governments are demanding safe, quality food. In response to this demand, increasing numbers of retailers and food service providers, restauranteurs and caterers, are mandating that their suppliers receive third-party certification with a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) approved scheme. The Standard provides benefits not only for the retail industry, but also for food manufacturers, importers, caterers, ingredient suppliers and the food service industry and is an international mark of excellence for the certificate holder.

If a supplier gains the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety certification, it assures the customer that they are dealing with a company that reaches high levels of competence in all critical areas. They will know that their supplier is monitoring and continually improving their product quality, safety and legality, and that they have taken every possible precaution to prevent problems should there ever be a challenge made against a product. The certification audit report will be one of the documents an enforcement authority would require from a retailer or brand owner to demonstrate that their supplier was competent to produce a safe and legal product.

Digicel Fiji and Punjas have provided a shot in the arm for Fiji Netball, which includes launching a new nationwide Super League competition

Monday 2nd March, 2015 – Digicel Fiji and Punjas are delighted to announce a massive joint sponsorship of the Fiji Netball Association.

Both companies have combined to sponsor Netball in Fiji for the next three years for a ‘substantial’ investment in the sport. Netball will receive in excess of $350k over the next three years to continue growing the country’s single biggest female participation sport.

The new deal will see the launch of a new franchise style Super League competition which starts with a ranking tournament at the Lautoka multi-purpose courts this Saturday. The six-team Digicel Punjas Super League Netball tournament is a shot in the arm for Netball and looks to further develop talent in Fiji. The Super League series will exhibit Fiji’s best Netball talent, and provide the showcase from which the national team, currently ranked 7th in the world, will be selected.

“I am thrilled that with our partners Punjas, we can continue to support Fiji Netball following an extremely successful Digicel Tri-Series sponsorship last year. With this substantial investment offered to Fiji Netball it provides the platform for ongoing player development in the country,” said Digicel Fiji’s Commercial Director, Mr. Andrew Skelton.

Punjas Group Marketing Manager, Mr. Gopal Jadhav said, “The chance to support our netballers across the country has come at the right moment. Punjas celebrates 80 years of service this year and a big part of our focus is on giving back to the communities that have supported us throughout those eight decades.”

The three year sponsorship deal also covers the International Series which is held in May/June every year and the National Championships in August.

“I am both pleased and excited that we have continued our relationship with Fiji Netball. This highlights our commitment to the country’s largest female participation sport. When you couple this support with Saturday’s upcoming ‘Women in Business Awards’ where Digicel is a key sponsor, we continue to confirm our ongoing support for female activities throughout Fiji.” added Mr. Skelton.

“This is a big day for both companies and Fiji Netball. Netball is one of the most popular team sports in the country, with a successful national team and a thriving grass roots scene. Our intention is to support Fiji Netball as they continue their development of the sport within the country, particularly as we are in a Pacific Games and World Cup year.”

Mr. Jadhav commented that “Our netballers can surely climb higher and go further with the right combination of resources and nurturing of talent. The Netball World Cup to be played in Sydney in August this year should be an interesting time to observe our national team at its best.”

Netball Fiji President, Mrs. Wainikiti Bogidrau said,” We are delighted to be entering this new partnership with both Digicel Fiji and Punjas. With this sponsorship comes security around investing in the sports future which is hugely rewarding. This places Netball Fiji on a very steady financial footing which is great for the sport. We can now focus on playing netball and looking forward to an outstanding year as we take part at both the Pacific Games and the World Cup.”

“With success continuing on and off the court, this announcement highlights Netball Fiji’s excellent reputation within the country and the attraction for big brands to now align themselves with a prosperous and effective organization, added Ms. Bogidrau.

“We want to give netball players at grassroots level more regular and quality competition. With this sponsorship deal now endorsed, we can build and start to deliver on these aspirations.”

The Digicel Punjas Super League will see Suva, Nasinu, Nadroga, Navosa, Lautoka/Nadi and Tailevu/Naitasiri teams battle for ranking points this Saturday before the opening round of games on Saturday week.
